Yes you can! Draw a pencil portrait

Updated: Aug 14, 2019

You really can learn to transform a favorite photo into a quality drawing. Our step-by-step tutorial walks you through the whole process, from start to finish.

Supplies:

  • 1 sheet of card stock or watercolor paper

  • 1 pencil (I use a mechanical one)

  • A good eraser (I use a clic eraser)

  • RulerCopied/printed version of the photograph you’d like to use (don’t use the original - you’ll need to mark it)

A note on choosing a photograph:

  • Closeup photos of faces make the best portraits - and also makes your job easier as the artist (less things going on)!

  • Choose a photo that is clear and has a high resolution so you can see lines and details clearly.

  • Crop photos to get an even better closeup. But if you crop make sure it’s still the approximate size of the frame (wether you choose vertical or horizontal).
