The story behind "The Way"
On a particular fascination with keys, I began to think about a verse from the Bible, John 14:6, “Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.' " I thought about how Jesus is kind of like the key that unlocks the door to heaven. I then created a scene of the crucifix with a key instead of the cross. The key still represents the cross, as the viewer can see in the key’s shadow. The key is bleeding where Jesus would be nailed to the cross.
The blood from the nails runs down the hill to meet silhouettes of worshippers, or believers in Christ. If you look closely, you can see that each trail of blood ends in a lit spot for each believer’s heart, symbolizing redemption and salvation by way of the blood that was spilled. The focus of the painting is on this key. It is the source of light in the painting, as if the sun was directly behind the key. The key is light, and everything else is either dark or highly shadowed. Lightning around the key represents powerful death: sin manifested into the cross so that it could be forever put to rest. The sun and the moon communicate the relationship between God and Jesus (his Son), one and the same, yet distinctly different. The display of stars that surrounds the scene indicates that the whole universe is attentive to this forever change.
